TRAINING PERIOD | 2 MONTHS

The first part is the training period based at our Michigan campus. You and your team will learn the practical skills needed for the project work in communities. You will learn a broad variety of topics connected with current events regarding food insecurity and other related topics.

Part of the practical training of this period takes place in One World Center’s Garden Farm. You will learn about growing and harvesting organic food first-hand. Additionally, you and your team will participate in outreach activities in the local area with organizations connected with poverty and food insecurity.

PROJECT PERIOD | 3 MONTHS

Following your training for the USA Volunteer Program with One World Center, you and your team will be assigned to a project in Michigan or Northwest Indiana to support local community development projects. You will learn firsthand how to be the multi-faceted community development worker that is so desperately needed to support growth and sustainability in a local community environment.

Depending on the season and the needs of your assigned project, you will work with: growing good quality food for the communities around the project; teaching children life skills and assisting with homework; and preparing various community events (e.g. thanksgiving dinners, school supply drives, various community fairs).

Like with any of One World Center’s programs, your team will live in the communities where you work. Living within the community you are serving, allows for a more intimate understanding of what their daily life is like and the challenges they face.

CONCLUSION PERIOD | 1 MONTHS

You and your team will return to the Michigan campus to reflect on your experiences. This final stage of the cycle allows you to share your findings and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the work in the field. You will hone your skills as a public speaker by preparing multimedia presentations. You and your team will discuss and craft the message that you wish to bring to the public. You will take your presentation on the road on a tour around Michigan in order to raise awareness about poverty in the USA and the specific issues you and your team wish to highlight.
